The Basics of Garage Door Repair

Repairing a broken garage door does not require you to pay someone to fix it. Believe it or not, you can already do it on your own even if you are just a beginner. Basically, garage doors are made up of two sections. The first is called the mechanics and is the part responsible for opening and closing mechanisms. If you look at your garage walls, you'll see metal tracks controlled by a large spring. These are the tracks which enable the door to move. The second part, on the other hand, is the door itself.

There are three things which you can do for your garage door repair. The first one is to assess the metal tracks. Since these metal tracks are the mechanisms most used/moved on the door, they are also the ones which break most often. To check them, look at the brackets which attach the tracks on the garage wall. If they are loose, simply tighten the bolts and screws. You can also try to replace them entirely especially if their shape are a little distorted already.

Another thing important for garage door repair is to check the alignment of the tracks. This is important because it is the mechanism which allows the garage door to roll properly. You can know if they are properly aligned if the horizontal track is positioned at an angle a little lower than the back tracks. If they are misaligned, simply loosen the screws and bolts, but do not take them entirely out, and adjust them to their proper positions.

On the other hand, the problem might also be because of the springs. Springs used for too long may need replacement or you can also try moving its hook farther to extend its life. If your garage door is a roll-up, this means that you are using a spring cable as a pulley. To fix it, simply take off the cable and pull at the plate situated above the door simultaneously. Once the spring tension is adjusted, fix the knot to stabilize the tension.
