1. Your garage door is manually locked.

2. Your garage's sensors are dirty or broken.
Your garage sensors that stretch from one wall frame to the other. If these sensors pick up any object or movement, the sensors send a signal to the opener to stop closing. It's meant as a safety measure to ensure that children and pets aren't accidentally caught underneath the door. Your sensors may be the problem if your garage opens, but it doesn't close. If that's the case, your sensors might be dirty or broken, in which case, they'll need to be fixed in order to work normally again.

3. You've got broken torsion springs.
Is your garage refusing to lift at all? Your door's torsion springs might be the problem. These springs are heavy-duty devices that help lift the door - and like any piece of equipment, they can get rusted or break over the course of several years. If you hear a loud bang while opening your garage, that's probably one of your torsion springs breaking. In this case, it's important to call a professional right away, as it can be dangerous to fix torsion springs on your own.

4. Your dis Connector was accidentally enabled.
The disconnect switch is a failsafe that allows you to manually open your garage in case your house loses power. You can tell if the disconnect switch is the problem if you hear the garage opener motor running, but your door isn't moving at all. This is a quick fix in that you can disable the disconnect switch by attaching the disconnect rope back to your garage (make sure you do it when the door is fully open or closed).

5. Your battery is dead.
Last but not least, check to see if the batteries in your remote are actually working. You'd be surprised at the number of people who run through the gamut of reasons why their garage door might not be opening, only to have the problem simply come down to dead batteries. If your garage opens but only when you step closer to the door, this is a surefire sign that your batteries are running out of juice. Swap them out to quickly solve this issue.
